Foreman, Jr., a renowned public policy research scholar, has joined the University of Maryland School of Public Affairs faculty, the School announced today. He will head the School's social policy program and teach courses on social policy and political institutions and leadership. Dr. Foreman comes to the School from the Brookings Institution, where he served as a Senior Fellow in the Governmental Studies Program. His study of American institutions and the intersection of these institutions with issues of health, safety, and the environment, has produced numerous, highly regarded publications. His first book, Signals from the Hill: Congressional Oversite and the Challenge of Social Regulation (1988), won the 1989 D.B. Hardeman Prize for the best book on Congress. His provocative book, The Promise and Peril of Environmental Justice (1998), suggests that social justice advocates have regularly misperceived the true nature of environmental and health problems facing low-income and minority communities. Dr. Foreman's other books have dealt with public health, and political strategies for African-Americans. His current research examines both the challenge of building and sustaining effective health coalitions in the African American community and the politics of environmental reform. Dr. Foreman is also the author of numerous policy-oriented articles and reviews. "As a leading voice on environmental and public health policy, Chris Foreman is superbly qualified to provide senior leadership at the School," said MSPA Dean Susan C. Schwab. "His interests will bridge social policy and environmental policy--two of the School's nationally prominent fields of specialization." Dr. Foreman has taught at the University of Maryland, American University, and Johns Hopkins University. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Harvard University. ### –
