Terp Thon
Terp Thon aims to raise $1,000,000 For The Kids at Children's National Health System to help fund patient care and change lives.

Project Description

Every minute, 62 children are admitted to a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital nationally, and not a single child is turned away. By the time you finish reading this application, hundreds of children will have been admitted, and many of these hospitals rely on philanthropy to treat their patients. We raise funds and awareness for Children’s National Health System--our local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. Terp Thon is a student-run organization that raises funds and awareness for Children’s National Health System. Our year-long effort culminates in a 12-hour Dance Marathon, which we host every March. Last year, over 2,500 students registered as “dancers” for the event, and with their support, we raised over $728,000 For The Kids. The tremendous love and support from campus propelled Terp Thon to being the ninth top fundraising Miracle Network Dance Marathon, one of the fastest growing Dance Marathons in the nation, and the largest student-run philanthropy in the state of Maryland. This year, we’ve set a goal of raising $1,000,000, which would set a national record for the youngest program ever to break 1 million. Everything we do is For The Kids (FTK). The pediatric patients at Children’s National are at the heart of all that we do, and we make sure that all of our events and fundraising pushes maintain a strong connection to the cause. From organizing card-writing campaigns to cheer up bedridden children, to simply never forgetting a child’s birthday, Terp Thon strives to support the kids in every way we can. With 330 Planning Team members, we are one of the largest organizations on campus. We work hard to ensure that a position within Terp Thon is as valuable as possible for our Planning Team members. Students are assigned to one of our 17 different committees with likeminded peers, which allows them to develop specific professional skills. Not only does Terp Thon afford our Planning Team opportunities for professional development, and leadership, but also personal growth. Many of our Planning Team members describe their time with Terp Thon as transformative. I know I speak for the entire Planning Team in saying Terp Thon has inspired a lifelong passion for helping others and giving back. This year, Terp Thon will be bigger and bolder, so that the kids can be stronger. With thousands of students registered for our Dance Marathon and hundreds of thousands of dollars raised already, we’ve set our sights high for this year. We are excited to see what we can accomplish through the Do Good challenge.
