Rebecca Hiemstra is from Ann Arbor, Michigan and got her BA in International Relations at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mi. Her interest in international affairs began when she lived in Germany for three years as a youth, and in college she focused her studies on Africa. Rebecca spent two years in the Peace Corps in rural Rwanda as a community health volunteer managing clean water/sanitation, HIV prevention, and nutrition projects and spent the past six months in Goma, Congo coordinating youth programs with a local development NGO. She is interested in nonprofit work and international development, and will be specializing in Nonprofit Management and Leadership at UMD and working as the Do Good Challenge Coordinator at the Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership. She enjoys learning new languages and speaks fluent German, Kinyarwanda, and French.
Chitra Kalyandurg is a firstyear master's student in the School of Public Policy specializing in Nonprofit Management and Leadership. Her policy interests include arts and cultural policy, as well as leadership and strategic growth within nonprofit organizations, specifically ethnocultural arts organizations. She is a Marylandnative with more than 12 years of experience working in the nonprofit sector, most recently with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, where she managed partnerships with federal host agencies and offices facilitating daytoday coordination of the Science & Technology Policy Fellowships program. Chitra’s previous positions included working in K12 engineering outreach at the American Society for Engineering Education, managing theater education programs at Arena Stage, and as an independent marketing and fundraising consultant to performing arts organizations. Chitra is a nationally recognized performer and choreographer in the south Indian classical dance style of Kuchipudi. She has been awarded multiple grants from the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County and received the prestigious Princess Grace Dance Honoraria for her artistic excellence in Kuchipudi. Chitra performs regularly as soloist and is a company dancer, associate choreographer, and administrative consultant with Bethesdabased Kalanidhi Dance.
