Grupo internacional de exploradores (International Group of Explorers)
The program seeks to examine and improve the educational opportunities of immigrant students in Maryland.

Project Description

I lead an after-school program in which low-income, immigrant, high school students learn social research methods and theoretical perspectives that help them understand and transform their school environments. In the program, the high school students have numerous opportunities conduct research on school-level issues that are important to them and that may enhance immigrants' schooling experiences. Ultimately, the program aims to improve the educational opportunities for both the participating youth and their peers in and beyond high school. Currently, I am carrying out the program at the International High School at Langley Park, a high school for immigrant students near the campus of the University of Maryland, College Park. At that school, I am working closely with several teachers who are UMd alumni. I also collaborate with CASA, a non-profit advocacy organization, to identify the students who could benefit most from the program and become community leaders. In the end, I hope that the program benefits not only the participating students but also their families and communities.
