Taking Policy Skills from the Classroom to the Real World

From the diverse course selections to the dual degree program offerings, Jahan Francois found everything she needed at the UMD School of Public Policy to embark on a career in public policy.
 
While completing a bachelor’s degree in government and politics at UMD, Francois learned about the SPP master’s degree programs and started attending information sessions. “I was impressed with the diversity of courses,” she said.

Alon Sherman Studies Policy to Pursue Longtime Passion to Change the World

When some students come to college for the first time, their passions are yet-to-be-determined. But for other students, their desires and interests are formed before they set foot on campus. For freshman public policy major Alon Sherman, a love of public policy started with the Model United Nations in high school. 
 
“My sophomore year of high school, one of my best friends introduced me to Model United Nations, and the rest was history,” Sherman says.

Undergraduate Student Jordan Teixeira’s Passion Leads Him to Major in Public Policy

Undergraduate student Jordan Teixeira took a unique path to becoming a public policy major at the UMD School of Public Policy. His public policy journey began when he was attending DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Md. 
 
He participated in an Intelligence Center for Academic Excellence junior scholars program for public policy in high school, and he says he drew inspiration from Research Professor William Nolte.
